Behind the innovations: Grupo Solitium

solitium

AMM – What was the motivation to start developing the product?

Grupo Solitium – This year, in the 3D division of Grupo Solitium we have incorporated two very innovative additive manufacturing systems, not so much for the technology, which is already known, but for all the application possibilities and cost savings it offers. On the one hand, we have to mention the Alba 300 from Samylabs, a metal additive manufacturing equipment based on SLM technology, with features, sizes and innovation never seen before in this range of investment, since we are talking about an equipment that allows us to get into metal additive manufacturing without assuming great economic risks. We can even acquire it as a complement to CNC manufacturing.

On the other hand, I think it is also relevant to talk about the HP 3D Jet Fusion 5420W, an organic evolution of HP’s 3D equipment for obtaining polyamide parts directly in white.

AMM – Can you tell us about the product development process, any anecdotes or stumbling blocks that got in the way?

Solitium Group – The process is not over yet. We are a distributor that, in addition to offering the technology, also provides our customers with advice and support so that they can introduce 3D printing technology into their internal manufacturing processes. And we never stop searching, researching, training and testing new proposals that arise in the market. But neither do the manufacturers we mentioned earlier, Samylabs and HP, stop innovating. Both companies continue to develop new technical advances to obtain improved performance in parts and technologies.

AMM – What is the technology that underpins this innovation?

Solitium Group – Within additive manufacturing there are more than 50 different technologies for layering and consolidating layers of material based on geometry. And they are not going to stop, as there are an infinite number of ways to carry out this manufacturing, given that concepts of materiality, speed, surface quality, mass distribution, etc., all have an influence. Therefore, each technology seeks an advantage in some of these characteristics.

AMM – What are the main advantages offered by this innovative product, what needs does it cover and how can it improve the life of companies?

Solitium Group – Within additive manufacturing there are more than 50 different technologies for overlaying layers of material and consolidating them on the basis of a geometry. And they are not going to stop, as there are an infinite number of ways to carry out this manufacturing, given that concepts of materiality, speed, surface quality, mass distribution, etc., all have an influence. Therefore, each technology seeks an advantage in some of these characteristics.

AMM – What sectors is innovation mainly aimed at?

Solitium Group – Mainly we could say that they are aimed at the small workshop that is looking for profitability for annual orders that are not justified by starting up a CNC or a plastic injection moulding machine, and also for companies that can take on more personalised projects and short runs.

AMM – What are the main obstacles facing a company that wants to develop an innovative product?

Grupo Solitium – The main fear of customers is the lack of knowledge of both technologies and alternative business models to the current ones in order to obtain a better and higher profit. But that is what companies like Grupo Solitium are there for, to guide in the technological vanguards and accompany companies in that change.
